Summary

Method of Mental Mapping and Its Application into Creation of Development Strategy of Microregion Dolina Voľanského Potoka

A method of mental mapping is an interdisciplinary approach, with the right to formulate a definition not only by geographers, but also by psychologists and sociologists. From cartographers and geographers point of view the mental map is graphical (cartographical or schematic) expression of human imagine about geographical space, especially of its quality or distribution. (Drbohlav 1991; Siwek, 2007). A survey, which is based on the use of mental maps, is very important. It gives „spatiality“ to the issue of perception of the local inhabitants to reflect the development of its area. Respondents have to think about a spatial context and transforming their verbal expressions into the real form. They have to consider not only the question of the existence or absence of activity, but also its real spatial localization. (Klamár, 2007, p. 82).
This article deals with the application of mental mapping as a tool of inhabitants’ view of regional development of Microregion Dolina Voľanského potoka (Valley of the Voľa creek). The microregion is located in the northeast part of the Slovak Republic, in the central part of the Prešov Self-Governing Region and in the northern part of the district Vranov nad Topľou. The main task for respondents of our survey was to specify the activities, which are important and which are missing in their municipalities, and consequently to situate them into the mental map. Mental maps were then evaluated and presented to the mayors of municipalities.
We can divide each activity, which respondents have suggested, into two groups: infrastructure activities and tourism activities. The most frequent development activity in microregion is construction of multifunctional playground; the second is development of new hiking trails and bike routes in cooperation with Tourism Center Ekovalali located in the municipality Skrabské. For residents other important activities are building the house of mourning, construction of sewerage and water supply, construction of new or renovation of existing park etc. Many people have suggested a building for tourists (guest house, pension etc.) to attract new tourists to the area of microregion. The mayors of municipalities commented the activities more or less positive and they stressed, that a lot of activities are necessary for municipalities. There are two problems which hinder development: lack of finances and problem with ownership of land.
