Abstract

The paper presents the issues of Ecomuseums and their importance to the local community and regional development. It focuses on pointing out differences and specifics of Ecomuseums and experiences of the regions in Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland with their preparation and activity. More attention is paid to the selected Ecomuseum in the Eastern Carpathians called „Faces of Fire“, which at that time starts to develop its activities. Within this Ecomuseum, mutual contacts are developed and experiences are exchanged based on the cooperation with some Polish Ecomuseums.

Key words: ecomuseum, natural and cultural heritage, local community, regional development, cooperation

Summary

Ecomuseums as a New Phenomenon in the Region Development on the Example of „Podoby Ohňa“ Ecomuseum

Ecomuseums in terms of their basic idea represent a very interesting product in the region development. They present a region not as a set of sites in their solitary status, but rather as a system in its mutual interaction and links to the local population. The core is a man and his activities in the natural, socio-historical and ideological context of a region. In this sense, the success of the ecomuseum projects depends on the effort and involvement of local actors working together for the benefit of the development of their own region. Ecomuseums thus represent a live organism that is constantly evolving and continually offering new experiences for its visitors.
This new approach proposes possibilities how to logically link natural, cultural and historical attractions of a region into a single unit with a specific idea and create a mutual product which can become a basis supporting the region development in the future. This is twice relevant in the Eastern Carpathians region which has a predominantly rural character without any significant economic base. Ecomuseums development in the broader context of rural development can bring a new developmental impetus to these regions. The fact that the ecomuseums are really beneficial for the regions is proved by successful examples in the Polish Carpathians, the area of Bieščad.
The development of the examined ecomuseum “Podoby ohňa” in the region of the Eastern Carpathians is still at an early stage. It begins to develop cooperation between actors in the region and build their mutual trust. Its success or failure will depend on how it will establish itself in the local community and how it will penetrate into the consciousness of the general public. First steps have already been implemented, however, it is still too early to assess its results and impact on the region development.
