Abstract
This article deals with the ontological and epistemological aspects of the geographical analysis of the intra-urban structure dynamics in the postsocialist period. The main aim is to conceptualize an adaptative transformation as a meta-process of the urban changes in the postsocialist period. We discuss the ontological aspects of this research in the framework of the adapted Bochum model. Our epistemological discussion is focused on the strategy of research in the framework of the trinity version of place concept.

SUMMARY

ADAPTATIVE TRANSFORMATION OF THE INTRA-URBAN STRUCTURES IN POSTSOCIALIST PERIOD: Ontological and Epistemological Considerations

In the present essay, we introduce the basic theoretical framework of the intra-urban structures dynamics during the adaptive post-socialist transformation regime. We focused on the ontological and epistemological dimensions of the mentioned theoretical framework. We discuss the ontological dimension through conceptualization of the post-socialist city, its intra-urban structures, and the processes of their transformation. We introduce a concept of the adaptive transformation as a crucial meta-process, which is connected with urbanization processes in the postsocialist city. The adaptive transformation is represented by complex, partly complex, and elementary transformation processes, which are differentially expressed in different areas of the post-socialist city. In relation to the adapted Bochum model, we conceptualize our research object as a three-level model, consisting of nonmaterial entities of anthropogenic origin and material/physical entities of natural and anthropogenic origin with different degrees of developmental complexity. The lowest level is represented by physiospheric and technospheric entities, the higher level by sociospheric entities, and the highest level by noospheric and cyberspheric entities. This trinity nature of the object of our study reflects the epistemological and methodological dimension of our theoretical framework. This is the simultaneous application of three explorational optics with a differentiated mix of nomothetic and idiographic approaches to the production of geographic knowledge. It is a compositional, socioconstructivist, and contextual as well as substancional-axiological optics. We pointed out the interrelationships between mentioned explorational optics and intra-urban structure changes.
