Abstract
The University of Prešov in Prešov is one of the largest public universities in Slovakia. Research results indicate that the University plays a significant role in the Slovak university educational system. It is not merely a regional university but one with a nationwide scope, attracting students from all districts of Slovakia. However, its primary attendance area is in Eastern Slovakia, where the University provides education, particularly for people in regions located far from the largest educational centers of Western and Central Slovakia.
Key words: University of Prešov in Prešov, students, school attendance, importance, spatial position
Summary
University of Prešov – Position and Spatial Impact Within the Slovak Public Universities
One of the fundamental elements of a post-industrial society is the development of the knowledge economy. The historical development of higher education in Slovakia has several specifics shaped by the country’s political and constitutional development. A geographical analysis of higher education in Slovakia cannot be limited solely to the recent development of the university network or its branches. The most intriguing geographical aspect is the spatial impact of individual schools, which can be assessed through the lens of their student attendance regions.
Research results indicate that the University of Prešov, despite its relatively short independent existence, holds a significant position among Slovak universities. This is largely due to the long-standing presence of higher education in Prešov, which predates the formal establishment of the University of Prešov by decades and is rooted in even older traditions. While the University of Prešov does not have a strong nationwide impact in terms of attendance regions, it has established a robust and irreplaceable role as a key center of higher education in Eastern Slovakia. This position is further underscored by the increasing competition among public universities in Slovakia.
