Abstract

The issue of regional development is a significant topic that affects various societal sectors, particularly in the context of regional disparities, representing one of the most pressing challenges not only in Slovakia but also across the broader European context. This paper aims to provide an overview of the status and trends of regional disparities in the districts of Trnava County from 2001 to 2010, focusing on the registered unemployment rate and foreign direct investments. The analysis employs the Gini coefficient, coefficient of variation, and point method to measure regional disparities.

Summary

Analysis of Status and Development of Regional Disparities in the Districts of Trnava County in the Years 2001–2010

This study evaluates the level of regional disparities in the districts of Trnava County, with a particular focus on assessing the impact of the economic crisis. The registered unemployment rate and foreign direct investments were selected as the main indicators. To measure regional disparities, the Gini coefficient, coefficient of variation, and point method were applied. The introduction provides definitions of key terms such as region, disparity, and regional disparity.

The analysis reveals several key findings. The economic crisis significantly influenced the observed indicators, leading to a high level of regional disparities. In 2009, the crisis impacted Slovakia with the greatest intensity, resulting in a rising unemployment rate and stagnating foreign direct investments. The negative effects of the economic crisis were closely associated with an increase in regional disparities. The resolution of the economic crisis is heavily dependent on the broader situation within the European Union (EU), as Slovakia, an EU member, is deeply integrated into the European market through foreign capital, subcontracting, exports, and other economic ties.

In the final section, the point method was used to calculate an integrated indicator. Points were assigned to each district based on individual characteristics, and the total score reflected the specific nature of regional disparities. The districts were then classified into five groups according to their scores. Map 1 illustrates the classification of districts into groups based on the overall average scores achieved between 2001 and 2010. Within Trnava County, the district of Trnava emerged as the leader, while the districts of Dunajská Streda and Senica were identified as lagging.
